Bio

My name is Max Bryans, and I’m not your usual recent graduate. I’ve had a varied career in the fields of Quality Assurance, manufacturing, consultancy and business administration. Having whet my appetite by doing the Harvard CS50 course, I decided to take the jump and return to education to get a programming degree.

Games have always been a passion of mine (PC and modern board games). That and the fact games programming has a heavy emphasis on optimisation made the Kingston University degree a great fit.

I love solving problems to make stuff work. I also hate rework and inefficiency. Put these traits together and you get a coder who is not shy of taking the time to create tools which make the job easier. The MaxCanvas project is a case in point, when I was learning I found the HTML canvas element driven by JS to be a great way of experimenting. But the native canvas API can be best described as “barebone”. So to adhere to the DRY principle, I developed my own suite of tools.

Embarking on a 3 year degree course was a major commitment, but has been well worth the investment. As well as providing a solid grounding in all things Computer Science, it has allowed me the time to develop my skills. The team working aspect was particularly useful. As it has provided experience in what it means to work on a larger project, and what that requires for code management, structure and documentation. I’ve been fortunate to have some very talented team members, and I’d like to work within a close team where the sharing of ideas and exploration is expected and rewarded.
